Looking after your first puppy

First puppy

Puppies are a joy to have as pets. They bring so much joy and fun into our lives! But they do need extra care and attention when they’re young, so we’re here to help you out with some tips on how you can make the first few weeks of your first puppy’s life go smoothly.

Puppy proofing

Puppies are curious and energetic, so it’s important to puppy-proof your home. This will help keep them safe from harm as they explore their new world. Here are some tips for keeping your new dog safe:

  • Cover electrical cords. If you want to keep your puppy away from electric wires or cords, you can buy special covers at hardware stores that will prevent access to the cord itself while still allowing electricity through it if needed.
  • Remove hazards like cleaning chemicals and medications, sharp objects like scissors and knives (especially those with pointed ends), poisonous plants like lilies or daffodils (even though they’re pretty), toxic substances like paint thinners/thickners–and anything else harmful in general! I recommend keeping anything potentially dangerous out of reach from both humans AND animals just as an extra precautionary measure 🙂
  • Install a baby gate if there are stairs leading up or down somewhere around where your pet likes spending time–it’ll save yourself some headaches later on when trying not only figure out what keeps happening but also why!

Puppy training

You will probably have a lot of questions about your new puppy, and we are here to help you along.

The first thing you need to do is teach your dog basic commands such as sit, stay and come. Start by making sure they are comfortable with being touched before trying any training exercises. Then begin by rewarding your puppy with praise or treats when they perform the desired behaviour correctly so that they know what you want from them!

If at any point during training your puppy gets distracted or frustrated (which can happen), take a break for five minutes then try again later when their energy levels have calmed down again – don’t give up after one or two attempts; this may take some time but eventually they will get used to obeying commands given by humans!

Socialisation

Socialization is the process of exposing your puppy to as many different people, places and things as possible. This is done in order to help them develop confidence, learn about their environment and become more comfortable with things that may be unfamiliar to them.

Your first step is identifying what makes your puppy anxious or fearful. You may have noticed this already by watching their reactions when they meet new people or go outside for the first time. If so, then try working on those specific situations before moving onto others in order to build up confidence gradually over time.

When introducing new experiences (such as going out on walks) it’s important not just for your dog’s safety but also yours! You want them off-leash and paying attention so they don’t run off into traffic or approach another dog who isn’t friendly towards yours yet – which could result in an attack if neither party knows how else get away from each other!

Puppy teeth and chewing

When you’re caring for your puppy, you’ll want to be aware of the fact that teething is a normal part of puppy development. Puppies’ teeth can be sharp and painful, so it’s important to make sure that they have plenty of things to chew on when they start growing in.

Teeth are important for eating, as well as chewing and biting. If your pup doesn’t have enough things to chew on during this time, he may try chewing furniture or carpet instead–both of which can stain!

A positive experience for your new puppy will mean a loyal friend for life.

A positive experience for your new puppy will mean a loyal friend for life. Your puppy will look up to you as the leader of the pack, and will be happy to follow your lead in everything.

Your puppy will love being around people, so it’s important not to leave them alone for long periods of time. This can make them feel lonely and abandoned which can lead to bad behaviour later on in life!

The best way to keep your puppy happy and safe is to set up a positive experience with him or her. With the right training, socialization and puppy proofing, you can avoid many problems in the future. This will also help build a bond between you and your new pet which will last forever!
